Wage Information: Hourly rate of pay of $30.16 (starting) - $31.36 (after 3 months) - $32.61 (after 12 months)

Reporting to the Manager of Recreation Programs and Services or designate, the Recreation Programmer is responsible for the delivery of the Town’s recreation programs and events through the creation of new programs, planning, scheduling, program supervision, staff supervision, leading programs as needed, and providing quality customer service to patrons.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, implement, and organize core lesson plans for instructor use, research and develop potential new programs and partnerships in the community, and compile program information for marketing and promotional materials.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of programs; instruct programs where required; conduct and/or assist with ongoing evaluations of programs.
  • Provide customer service support: general inquiries, registrations, bookings, and program information.
  • Resolve problems/conflicts with patrons and/or staff using appropriate behaviour management techniques.
  • Supervise part-time recreation staff and volunteers; assist with recruitment, onboarding, training, and staff scheduling, input preliminary payroll, and conduct performance reviews.
  • Assist with development and implementation of policies and procedures, standard operating procedures; and content for the department’s leisure guide publication, website, and social media.
  • Provide back-up to department staff as operationally required, undertake special projects, and perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental or corporate objectives.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Post-secondary diploma from an accredited college in recreation, leisure studies or a relevant field with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in recreation programming.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C Certification, HIGH FIVE Principals of Healthy Child Development, HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Aging and HIGH FIVE Quest 2 certification required (or willingness to obtain).
  • Relevant program certification related to area of responsibility (e.g. lifeguard, swim instructor, Lifesaving Society Instructor, Examiners and Supervisory, aquatic and fitness, climbing wall, Challenge Course Level 2, wellness, and sport).
  • Other recreation program certifications considered an asset (e.g. Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer, First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor and Examiner, HIGH FIVE Principles or Healthy Child Development Trainer, HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Aging Trainer, Association of Challenge Course Technology Course Manager, Certified Pool Operator, Waterslide Mechanic, and Crisis Intervention Training).
  • Good working knowledge of relevant legislation, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS 2015.
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment or independently and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, instructors, department officials, and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication, administrative, customer service, organizational, analytical, problem solving, research and time management skills. Able to work under pressure and with a keen attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, recreation management software, and social media platforms. Experience with web technology and design software is considered an asset.
  • Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
  • A valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s license in good standing with a current and acceptable Driver’s Abstract and a reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
