About the job

As part of our dedicated food service team, you'll play a crucial role in preparing nutritious meals for inmates while maintaining a safe and spotless kitchen environment.

Your leadership and expertise will ensure the smooth running of our kitchen, providing essential support to our inmate helpers as you:

• Lead our culinary team in the correctional institution
• Guide and support inmate helpers
• Prepare and assemble nutritious meals
• Manage inventory of supplies
• Ensure the safety and security of helpers, staff, and equipment
• Maintain impeccable sanitary conditions in the kitchen

**Please note:
• This position is on-call 0 to 40 hours per week with no guaranteed minimum amount of hours

What you bring to the team

Mandatory Requirements:

•You currently hold these certifications (or can complete or renew them upon hire):
- A Journeyman Chef's Certificate issued by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities OR sufficient acceptable experience in volume cooking
- A Valid First Aid and Heartsaver Certificate

•You are flexible and available to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.

•You are required to work with and provide direction to inmate helpers.

•You must be able to be physically present at this location during your scheduled shifts: Sudbury Jail, 181 Elm Street, Sudbury.

Food Service Knowledge:

You have:
• Knowledge of general and volume cooking/baking methods
• Experience with food preparation, storage, and portion control
• Ability to prepare various foods and restricted diets
• Familiarity with food safety practices and kitchen equipment
• Understanding of health and safety standards (e.g., OHSA, WHMIS, Public Health Act)
• Ability to follow workplace policies to ensure kitchen safety and security

Communication and Team Leadership Skills

You can:
• Guide inmate helpers in cooking methods and kitchen cleanliness, and evaluate their performance
• Use tact and diplomacy to collaborate with ministry staff, inmate helpers, and service providers
• Prepare reports with strong written communication skills

Other Essential Skills

You can:
• Analyze and resolve equipment malfunctions, supply shortages, and food service issues
•Use basic computer skills to input, track, and record data
