CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, unionized

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

REPORTS TO: Public Works Superintendent

POSITION SUMMARY
The position is to operate various pieces of heavy equipment and to perform labour and maintenance duties as required. This position is responsible to the Public Works Superintendent.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Operates various pieces of municipal road maintenance equipment such as graders, backhoes, front end loaders and plough/haul trucks, snow removal, sanding, culvert installation, gravel application, pavement patching, and other road maintenance work.
2. Performs daily maintenance and checks on equipment and report any major repairs that may be required.
3. Maintains a daily log for equipment used, recording fuel oil and parts used, the time required to complete individual assignments and completes daily timesheets.
4. Hauls and places aggregate materials, gravel and cold mix, and patches roads.
5. Perform labourer duties as assigned.
6. Clears drainage ways when they are impeded by ice or debris.
7. Observes and practices safety in the field
8. May be required to perform general maintenance duties at landfill sites.
9. Develops a thorough working knowledge of the Municipality’s Safety Policies and Procedures Manual and applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
10. Performs other related duties as required.

SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS
This position does not have any supervision requirements.
CREDENTIALS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
1.Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade 12), minimum.
2.Well-developed knowledge of Road Construction & Road Maintenance methods. Any course work is an asset.
3.Good understanding of drainage.
4.Clear & polite communication with the Public, management, and other crew members.
5.Ability to function without immediate supervision.
6.Understands written documents, drawings and diagrams, verbal instructions and direction.
7.Must possess and maintain an Ontario Class DZ driver’s license minimum, with an acceptable driving record. AZ is preferred.
8.First Aid/CPR, Chain saw Operator certificate required. WHMIS, OTM Book 7, and other training required. Other certification is an asset.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONIDITIONS
1.Must be in good physical health, and capable of performing all work, including occasional lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects (up to 50kg), working with various chemicals and working in confined spaces.
2.Work in all types of weather, times, and environmental conditions.
3.Requirement for sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in multiple environments; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight
4.Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (steel toed boots with minimum 8” uppers and Hi-Viz type Class 3 traffic vest).
5.Shift work and overtime required through an overtime sharing process. Work is subject to unusual and unscheduled hours based on a variable forty (40) hour work week. This may include evenings and weekends as work load fluctuates.
