Position Title: Standby Crossing Guard Area/Department: By-Law Services – Development Services Services Reports to: Manager of By-law ServicesPOSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Manager of By-law Services or designate, Standby Crossing Guards are a vital part of our staffing plan, providing essential coverage during planned and unplanned absences and helping keep our community moving. You’ll help children and families cross streets safely, promote traffic safety awareness, and contribute to a safer community for all. The Standby Crossing Guard is responsible for safely escorting and assisting children and adults across designated roadways and intersections.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES
- Assists members of the public by safely escorting them across the streets as determined by the Town.
- Maintains a positive public image at all times while on duty, including wearing the required personal protective equipment.
- Works to educate members of the public on traffic safety regulations and best practices in high-traffic areas and promotes safe use of pedestrian crossings.
- Monitors and reports any observed problems or safety concerns arising at the assigned crosswalk or pedestrian crossing to the Manager or designate.
- Serves as a resource for members of the public regarding traffic issues.
- Obeys all traffic safety regulations, follows all Town policies and procedures, and ensures all health and safety regulations are upheld.
- Works in a respectful, friendly, and courteous manner and communicates effectively with co-workers, supervisors, elected officials, and the general public.
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous learning, modeling inclusive behaviours, and proactively managing bias.
EDUCATION, SKILLS and EXPERIENCE
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent.
- Experience working with members of the public, specifically children, and a proven record of reliability is an asset.
- Ability to follow directions and instructions and work with minimal supervision.
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C or willingness to become certified, an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff.
- Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
- Good verbal communication, customer service, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, judgement, and time management skills.
- Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
- Possess the physical ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To learn, understand and practice standard Town operating procedures.
- To be familiar with and comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations; and the Towns Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
- To take every possible precaution to protect themselves and fellow workers from health and safety hazards and unsafe situations.
- To report unsafe acts or conditions to their supervisor or a Health and Safety Committee Representative.
- To report any occupational injury or illness immediately to their supervisor.
- To use personal protective equipment, where required.
- To report any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
PHYSICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL DEMANDS and WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment: Conditions vary from exposure to inclement weather conditions, both hot and cold, rain, wind and dust, vehicle fumes, traffic noise, and public criticism. Requirement to juggle priorities, verbally communicate to exchange information, deal with constant interruptions and changing demands during the course of a working day; occasions whereby an extremely short amount of time is available to complete a project or task (regularly); while maintaining a pleasant, professional and positive demeanour.
Physical: Requirement for sufficient physical ability and mobility to stand, walk, and lift and hold a handheld stop sign overhead for prolonged periods of time;. to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; walk on uneven terrain, loose soil, and sloped surfaces; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations; to operate equipment and vehicle;
This position requires good mobility, steady balance, the ability to lift and hold a stop sign overhead, and the ability to effectively hear and see on-coming traffic at a safe distance.
Ability to work scheduled shifts as stated. Work outside normal working hours may be required occasionally.
