JOB OVERVIEW
As a Field Assistant with Coote Hiley Jemmett Ltd., a division of Surveyors On Site Inc., in Bracebridge, you will work closely with a Party Chief to complete field survey projects throughout the Muskoka region. This role involves assisting with data collection, operating and maintaining survey equipment, vehicles, and workspaces, and supporting the smooth and efficient execution of field activities.
Field Assistants play a key role in helping projects run safely and effectively — from preparing and carrying equipment and tools to anticipating the next steps in the field. A strong Field Assistant is reliable, observant, and quick to lend a hand — the kind of person who gets tools ready before being asked, helps set up efficiently, and keeps the workday organized and productive.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, learning technical skills, and contributing to a team environment where accuracy and professionalism matter. It is also a progressive role leading toward a Party Chief position for candidates who demonstrate initiative, technical aptitude, and a commitment to developing their surveying skills.
The ideal candidate is dependable, adaptable, and comfortable working year-round in outdoor conditions, including shoreline and waterfront environments..
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Party Chief in completing surveys to establish and mark legal boundaries of properties, capture topographic features and complete construction layout.
- Ensure survey vehicle is equipped with the survey equipment, PPE, tools and supplies needed for project needs.
- Ensure vehicle is in good working order, clean, clear of garbage and organized
- Drive survey vehicle to and from work sites (upon request, with valid Driver’s license and clean driving record)
- Carry and transport survey equipment and materials to and from survey sites
- Set up, and operate survey equipment such as GPS units, total stations, and levels. Ensure survey equipment is in good working order, maintained and kept clean
- Carry, hold or move stakes, rebar and survey bars, clear brush and debris from line of survey and transporting surveying tools to and from work areas
- Assist in data collection, calculations, and preparation of fieldnotes, capturing site photos under the supervision of the Party Chief
- Regular clean up of survey vehicle, field room and garage areas – all to be tidy, free of garbage or unnecessary debris and organized.
- Communicate effectively with team members and report any issues to the Survey Party Chief
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and procedures during field activities
- Perform other tasks as required
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements:
· Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent).
· Valid Ontario G-class driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Good organizational and communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills related to surveying.
· Physically capable of year-round outdoor work in varied terrain and weather conditions.
· Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Assets:
· Post-secondary education in Civil /Survey Technician or Civil/Survey Technologist programs.
· Familiarity with survey equipment, maintenance and operation
· Experience performing or checking calculations related to construction layout in accordance with design drawings.
· Experience doing legal survey and boundary calculations.
· Familiarity with AutoCAD, Micro survey or other drafting software.
· Experience operating UAVs or other advanced survey technologies.
· Marine or shoreline safety awareness
· Boating experience and/or boat operator’s license
· Snowmobile experience
· Chainsaw experience/training

Physical Demands
- Ability to work in various outdoor environments, including wooded lots, marshes, uneven terrain, steep rock, shorelines, residential and cottage properties and undeveloped areas
- Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment and materials up to 50 pounds
- Standing and walking for extended periods, bending or twisting the body and making repetitive motions
- Exposure to weather conditions through all seasons
- Exposure to construction sites, sound and noise
- Use of standard safety equipment (PPE provided)
- Work on or near water
