Description

Shawanaga First Nation is seeking an experienced, dependable, and safety-conscious Public Works Operator to join our Public Works Department.

The Public Works Operator plays an essential role in maintaining the Nation's infrastructure and municipal services. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating heavy equipment, maintaining roads, drainage systems, water distribution infrastructure, public buildings, parks, and other community assets while ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently, and professionally.

The position requires initiative, sound judgment, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to respond effectively during emergencies including severe weather events, flooding, watermain breaks, and other infrastructure-related incidents.

Key Responsibilities

The Public Works Operator shall perform duties including, but not limited to:

Roads and Infrastructure

  • Operate graders, loaders, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, tractors, dump trucks, snowplows, and other municipal equipment.
  • Maintain community roads, shoulders, intersections, and rights-of-way.
  • Complete road grading, gravel placement, pothole repairs, ditching, and culvert installations.
  • Install and maintain road signage, barriers, and traffic control devices.
  • Perform routine inspections of community infrastructure.

Water and Wastewater Support

  • Assist with operation and maintenance of the community water distribution system.
  • Respond to watermain breaks, service repairs, and emergency water system issues.
  • Assist with hydrant maintenance, valve exercising, flushing programs, and leak detection.
  • Support wastewater infrastructure maintenance when required.
  • Maintain accurate operational records.

Facilities and Community Assets

  • Maintain parks, playgrounds, ball fields, community buildings, cemeteries, and public spaces.
  • Complete minor building repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Perform grass cutting, brush clearing, tree trimming, and seasonal clean-up.
  • Assist with community events requiring equipment, barricades, tents, or logistical support.

Winter Operations

  • Perform snow plowing and snow removal.
  • Sand and salt roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.
  • Remove snow around fire hydrants, public buildings, and emergency access routes.
  • Maintain winter equipment in operational condition.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Conduct daily equipment inspections.
  • Complete preventive maintenance.
  • Report equipment deficiencies.
  • Maintain equipment service records.
  • Keep all municipal equipment clean and in safe operating condition.

Health and Safety

  • Follow all Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Report hazards, incidents, and near misses.
  • Participate in safety meetings and ongoing training.

 

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years of municipal, construction, or public works experience.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence.
  • Class DZ Driver's Licence is considered a significant asset.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge.
  • Strong understanding of safe work practices.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) regularly.
  • Operate heavy machinery for extended periods.
  • Walk on uneven terrain.
  • Perform manual labour.
  • Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Respond to emergency situations outside regular working hours.
