     Checker Job Description for Highway, Road & Bridge Construction

Spector Construction Administrative Services works with the Ministry of Transportation to provide expertise with highway, road, and bridge infrastructure in the province of Ontario.

Must be a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual. Have the proven ability to work in a fast-past environment while providing detailed reports. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.  Ability to multi-task and inspect case sensitive construction situations. Performs other responsibilities assigned with this position as deemed appropriate.  Decision making and confliction resolution skills is a must.

Duties include assisting the Project Manager & Contract Administrator,

Core Accountabilities:

Work alongside and adhere to requests by Inspector(s) the primary objective of this position is to collect tickets, produced by the Contractor during material placements and ensure that they meet the contract requirements of the (Construction Administration Inspection Task Manual)

  • Witness the dumping of materials and view that each load is completely dumped.
  • Collect one (1) original and two (2) copies of the weight ticket from the truck operator at the dumping point. Check that the material is placed in the area designated for that type of material.
  • Check that the type of material delivered is the same as the type of material indicated on the weight ticket.
  • Visually inspect each load of material and report any obvious defects or deficiencies immediately.
  • Check that the weight ticket is completely filled out.
  • Write the word “Cancelled” on weight tickets for loads of material rejected or not received on the job. Record the reason on the ticket and sign it.
  • Fill in the line “placed” on the weight ticket (i.e. station and use of the material).
  • Sign the original and two (2) copies of the weight ticket.
  • In addition to the Task Manual requirements the following is required.
  • Able to legibly write and understand what is written on the tickets is a must!

All tickets are to be signed as received prior to submission to the Office Person.

The location of placement and/or reference to a pertinent change order is to be recorded on the ticket prior to submission to the Office Person.

Cancelled tickets must have quantity as determined by the inspector and/or must have written reasoning for the cancellation.

Check for evidence of overloaded trucks.

Manually calculate the daily total on EACH consecutive ticket.

Forms and Reports

  • A Daily Summary of Materials is to be completed prior to the following days work.

Experience & Qualification:

  • Basic math requirement
  • Able to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Must be organized and able to document all work.
  • Collect tickets from tri-axle trucks.
  • Keep a running total of the day for various type of material.
  • Sense of urgency and responsibility to meet all deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills both verbally & written.
  • Proactive behavior and strong attention to detail.
  • Accountability and analytical process review to prepare documents.
  • Ability to work in a fast-pasted environment.
  • Valid Class G drivers license is required.
  • Requirement to possess own vehicle (car, suv, truck, no motorcycle/ATV)

Hours of Work:

This position is a full-time seasonal contract position, with a hands-on approach. The hours will include hours outside of normal business operating hours and to include extended hours. Ability to provide 40-55hrs a week of productive work.

Please note this job requires standing, walking, working outside in the weather, rain, wind, sun, hot & cold.
