I was going to write a blog on procrastination but I just couldn’t seem to get started…

All kidding aside, procrastination can be a real downfall on the job search and at work. You may have the skills, you may have the ability to succeed, but unless you get the work done…or the resume submitted, no one will ever know.

Let’s have a look at some of the reasons why people procrastinate:

  1. Sometimes people set unrealistically high standards for a project and then cannot begin the task because it seems too difficult. These people tend to be perfectionists.
  2. Sometimes people get into a project and find that the details they have uncovered become too confused and overwhelming for them to pull the project together. Often these people find it difficult to translate their ideas into action.
  3. People may feel that leaving things to the last minute is “how they work best”. They rely on the time pressure to motivate them into action.
  4. People may resent the fact that they have to do the project at all and put it off as a form of personal protest.
  5. People may have difficulty deciding which task to tackle first when they have many things on the go. They may find it difficult to focus on and finish one item.
  6. People may feel inadequate doing a certain task and fear doing it wrong so they put it off.
  7. Some people will fill their time with tasks that are easier or more pleasurable to do. They will say they are “too busy” to get to certain jobs and allow easier tasks to become priority.

Have you ever found yourself procrastinating for any of these reasons?

Myself, I tend to do the “#7 thing”…# 3 is also a favourite of mine…has been since high school.

There are techniques we can use to conquer our procrastinating.  Rather than let something go undone and miss an opportunity to apply to a good job, or miss an opportunity to impress the boss, these techniques can help you address what type of procrastinator you are, and help you overcome.

But I have a few other things to do before I finish this blog posting…
